Cheerleading Stunts
Used with permission from American Internet Cheerleading Magizine
- If you are feeling tired or unwell you should not stunt.
- Always warm up and stretch before any practice session or performance.
- Ensure clothing and footwear are suitable. No hoods, baggy sweaters, jewellery, or low grip materials. Avoid unnecessary frills, trim, and pockets.
- Check the floor surface. It should be flat, solid, dry, free from loose items, and have a good surface.
- Check the surrounding area for dangerous obstructions such as chairs or railings.
- Check overhead for ceiling height, light fixtures or roof beams.
- Practice with crash mats, especially when indoors.
- Before practicing a stunt or pyramid talk through each stage, especially the dismount, before building.
- Pyramids should be practised to a count sequence. You can add music or chant words later, based on the count.
- Practice building a stage at a time, and dismounting from each stage.
- Beginners should start off mastering the basics and not be lead into advanced stunts.
- Bases should be set, and where applicable locked, before the flyer starts to mount.
- Use 'Step Lock' technique for climbing.
- Get stage one right before going onto stage two.
- Dismounting from each stage generates good control for bringing it down safely at any point.
- Every stunt or pyramid should be practised with spotters, ideally one person covering for every person off the ground. Everyone on the squad should become proficient in spotting techniques.
- Concentrate. Be alert.
- Only one person should be talking during stunt building practice, and then only to count.
- The keyword 'Down' is an imperative, called by any person it initiates an immediate controlled dismount.
- The final set should be held for at least a count of two, both for visual effect, and to aid dismount timing.
- Always dismount from the top down while continuing the count.
- Practice makes perfect, but beware that repetition can make for complacency.
Cheerleading Jumps
Used with permission from American Internet Cheerleading Magizine
Cheerleaders are known for their jumps. Without them cheers and chants would be dull and unexciting. To be the very best cheerleader you can be, you must concentrate on your jumps until you have mastered the basic skill: height, spread, form, and landing. Jumps are very important in cheerleading, but they are only one part of what makes cheerleading the respected sport it has become. You must also practice motions, voice technique, gymnastics, partner stunts, and appearance, which includes a confident smile. When you are jumping remember these 3 things:
- Always stretch first! Make sure your whole body is warmed up before you start your jumps. Your jumps will look better and you will avoid muscle injury.
- A jump has a beginning, a middle, and an end! Always begin your jumps with a "prep" or approach. Coordinate arms and legs to give your jumps height. Remember to keep your back straight, legs straight, and toes pointed. Land on the balls of you feet and rebound after every jump.
- Use jumps at appropriate times! A) when players are introduced, B) before and after cheers and chants, C) after gymnastics or stunts, and D) when an exciting play has just occurred. NEVER use jumps in negative situations, for example when a player from the other team is injured or
fouled out of the game.
Tryout Tips
More Tryout Tips may be found at The Cheer Starts Here
Tryout can make you nervous, but that is okay. The main thing is for you to go out there and show Your Stuff! If you think it's good enough and you are doing your best, then don't stess out. Enjoy the day.
- You have heard it 100 times, but 101 won't hurt . . . SMILE!!
- Make sure to know your stuff! You must practice. Start working on it a good 3 weeks before the big day.
- Don't be afraid to ask for help. Find a great friend or former cheerleader to help you get it right.
- Control your nerves - take a deep breath - and like going to the dentist this is something you just have to do.
- Treat yourself - part of the squad or not, you deserve something. And after all how many other times is there a good reason to stuff yourself will all your favs?
